Students in grades K through 5 are invited to join the chess club.  Kindergartners should know simple math and some reading and writing. Chess is excellent at teaching kids mental discipline, to look at all their options, to compete under time pressure, to play fair, to learn that mistakes have consequences, to not give up when behind, and to learn many more important life lessons.

Meeting Times: There will be two sessions offered this year. Session I will be held on Mondays and Session II will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:35pm to 5:05pm. 50 students can register for each session. They will be divided into 2 classes by the coaches:

  • Advanced class meet in the Library and comprise kids that playing at a strong level.
  • Beginning class will meet in Room 106 and comprise kids new to chess or still working on the basics.

Dates: Both Monday and Tuesday sessions will meet 25 times in the weeks of Sep 30, Oct 7, Oct 21, Oct 28, Nov 4, Nov 18, Nov 25, Dec 2, Dec 9, Dec 16, Jan 6, Jan 13, Feb 3, Feb 10, Feb 24, Mar 2, Mar 9, Mar 16, Mar 23, Mar 30, Apr 6, Apr 20, Apr 27, May 4, and May 11. (Update on 10/22/2019: Jan 27 (no-school day) deleted and May 11 added.)

Please send a snack with your child, they can eat it in the first 15 minutes. Please pick up and sign out your kids promptly at 5:05pm at the school entrance. If your students are in the school aftercare program, their teachers will pick them up after class.

Registration process: The registration will be a two-stage process. The first stage is priority registration and open to last year’s club volunteers only; the second stage, generation registration, is open to all active PTSA members.  General registration starts at 10 am on Monday, September 16th.

Coach Tim Campbell will return and teach the advanced class. Coach Brad Stensland will return and teach the beginner class. Tim and Brad have over 20 years of combined chess teaching experience and are the cofounders of All About Chess. Both coaches teach openings, middle game strategies, end game principles, tactics such as pins, forks, skewers, distraction, X-rays, decoys damming, blockades, and many others.  We will cover checkmates, stalemates, how to determine when a piece is in trouble, how to escape trouble, how to attack and defend, how to look at all your options, preserve your material, improve your position, and how to compete.

Tournaments: Tournament participation is optional, but encouraged for those who are ready.  We will target one weekend tournament per month Nov - Apr in the greater Seattle area. Tournaments usually run from 8:30am to 4:00pm – there are 5 games, each 1 hour long – kids play all 5 games win or lose. The State Championship is May 2, 2020 in Tri-Cities, WA this year - players need 3 out of 5 wins in any tournament to qualify for state.

Homework website: We will be using the website this year. Chesskid provides a safe atmosphere for kids to play games, practice tactics and other techniques, and learn new tools for use in class and tournaments. Chesskid can be played on computers, as well as most tablets and smartphones. Students should plan to do 1 hour of chess homework per week (it’s fun!).

Cost: The tuition rate is $370. The tuition includes: 25 chess club sessions, a full year license fee for the chess homework website, all the chess equipment and supplies needed, handouts, in-class rewards and year-end party. There is a small chance that this needs to be adjusted if the enrollment number is lower than expected. Not included: tournament registration fees (about $20 per tournament). No refunds after registration. In addition, all enrolled families need to have active PTSA memberships.

Payment Method: Please write the checks out to Somerset PTSA and add your children's names and "for chess club" in the notes area so that we can track your payment. The checks are due by 4 pm on Monday, September 23rd. (You can ask your kids to drop off the checks in the front office.)

Volunteers: Parents must be available to volunteer once during the year for each enrolled student.  No chess knowledge needed – you will be monitoring kids, helping to run the club, helping with checkout, and making sure rooms are clean at the end of the day. Volunteer sign up link will be sent to families after registration is complete.
