CHESS CLUB 2020-2021

Students in grades K through 5 are invited to join the Somerset Chess Club. Kindergartners should know simple math and some reading and writing. Chess is excellent at teaching kids mental discipline, to look at all of their options, to compete under time pressure, to play fair, to learn that mistakes have consequences, to not give up when behind, and many more important life lessons. Somerset’s Chess Club has consistently performed well in state tournaments, with the 2019-2020 club tying for first place!

All classes and practice tournaments will be conducted online this year until further notice. Returning Coaches Brad and Tim will teach using the ChessKid (https://www.chesskid.com/) platform. Similar to last year, there will be two sessions offered per day at 3:30pm.

On Mondays, Session I with Coach Brad will be a Beginner class, and Session II with Coach Tim will be an Advanced class.

On Tuesdays, Session I and II will both be for Intermediate players.

All sessions are scheduled from 3:30pm to 5:00pm. Depending on demand, a third session may be added at 5:10pm to accommodate overflow registration. The online format will be similar to that of last spring, with some changes incorporating feedback received from our Parent Survey.

Weekly 90-minute class format:

  1. Zoom + ChessKid.com - the coaches will collaborate with the class on a Zoom call, and students will play and learn on the ChessKid.com platform. Cameras are encouraged to help the coaches better assess engagement and understanding.
  2. Active Coaching lesson – interactive, puzzle, lesson (50-60 minutes)
  3. Tournaments(on ChessKid) - arranged by ratings, coach commenting (30 minutes)
  4. Breakout rooms – allow coaches to have smaller groups and further explain content

The first stage is priority registration and open to last year’s club participants only, from 10:00am-10pm September 21, 2020. (Last year's participants have already been sent email with priority link. Please contact sairam.jenny@gmail.com if you have not received it yet)

The second stage, general registration, is open to all active PTSA members. PTSA Membership

General registration opens at 10:00am on September 22nd, 2020. If your child is not an absolute beginner, the coaches are happy to do a short 1:1 video call with parents to assess ability before enrollment, they can be contacted directly at theallaboutschool@gmail.com.

*Please note that students will not have a choice of session, as the coaches will assess and schedule students according to ability and class size. We will ask for your preferred class day but preference for class day and time cannot be guaranteed.

Coach Tim Campbell will return and teach the advanced class. Coach Brad Stensland will return and teach the Beginner class. Tim and Brad have over 20 years of combined chess teaching experience and are the cofounders of All About Chess. Both coaches teach openings, middle game strategies, end game principles, tactics such as pins, forks, skewers, distraction, X-rays, decoys damming, blockades, and many others. They will cover checkmates, stalemates, how to determine when a piece is in trouble, how to escape trouble, how to attack and defend, how to look at all your options, preserve your material, improve your position, and how to compete.
Cost: The tuition rate is $320 which includes 25 chess club sessions and a Gold membership for the ChessKid website.

Not included: Extracurricular tournament registration fees if applicable (about $20 per tournament).
No in-person tournaments are being held at this time. This site will be updated if/when they become available.

No refunds after registration. In addition, all enrolled families need to have an active PTSA membership.
