All members of the Somerset PTSA Executive Committee and Board of Directors are unpaid volunteers who work together for the benefit of all Somerset Elementary students. These positions are open to all Somerset PTSA members. 

Somerset PTSA’s mission is to support the education, health, and welfare of each and every child at Somerset Elementary School. As part of Washington State PTA and National PTA, we are a nonprofit membership association bringing together the home, school, and community on behalf of all children.

 

Appointed Board of Directors (BOD) (~10)

The Board of Directors is composed of elected officials (i.e. the Executive Committee) and appointed members. Appointed BOD positions are selected by the President and approved by the EC.

  • Attends all regular BOD and General Membership (GM) meetings, and votes on PTSA matters that arise during those meetings 
  • Serves as fiduciary and ensures prudent use of all PTSA assets (monetary, volunteers, and goodwill)
  • Ensures that PTSA activities and transactions are, first and foremost, advancing its mission to benefit the school community and students
  • Ensures that the PTSA adheres to its approved Standing Rules, current WSPTA Bylaws, and stays focused on established goals/objectives
  • Serves as an ambassador and advocates for the PTSA

 

Executive Committee (EC) Positions

The Executive Committee is composed of the elected officials on the BOD. As a group, the EC is responsible for:

  • Same as appointed BOD members (see above)
  • Running day-to-day PTSA operations
  • Planning and overseeing all PTSA affairs in cooperation with the school, BOD, and other parent volunteers

 

President: Steers the Ship (1-2)

  • Collaborates with school administration and the BOD to set the overall vision of the PTSA and leads the group towards specific objectives
  • Acts as the liaison between the PTSA and Somerset Elementary School staff to align goals and streamline communication; works closely with the school Principal 
  • Serves as a designated signatory for all contracts, checks, and authorizations for payment
  • Serves as ex-officio member of all committees
  • Serves as the presiding officer of the PTSA and presides over all regular meetings: 
    • Executive Committee (EC): 1 per month
    • Board of Directors (BOD): 1 per 1-2 months
    • General Membership (GM): 3 per year 
  • Attends Bellevue Council meetings when possible, and shares relevant information with the BOD

 

Secretary: Recordkeeper (1-2)

  • Organizes and services all regular meetings (EC, BOD, GM) 
    • Calendar/zoom meeting invites
    • Produce agendas 
    • Meeting minutes
  • Manages the correspondence to and from the main SomersetPTSA email account
  • Maintains complete records of members and leaders
  • Maintains and updates the Calendar of Events
  • Maintains and ensures adherence to the National PTA Standards of Affiliation

 

Treasurer: Finance Manager (1-2)

  • Maintains permanent records to track incoming/outgoing funds and financial transactions
  • Ensures taxes and reports required by PTSA bylaws, insurance, or federal/state governments are completed and submitted on time
  • Chairs the budget committee and prepares the annual budget 
  • Presents treasurer reports at all regular meetings (EC, BOD, GM)

 

VP Communications: Community Connector (1-2)

  • Gathers/writes blurbs and pictures to be sent out in the weekly eNews newsletter
  • Maintains and utilizes social media (Facebook, Instagram) to promote PTSA events, programs, and other relevant information to the community 
  • Works with the Website Administrator to maintain an up-to-date website

 

VP Programs: Activity Director (1-2)

  • Collaborates with the BOD to plan programs and events for the school year
  • Works with committee chairs to organize and implement approved programs and events 
  • Presents post-event reports at all regular meetings (EC, BOD, GM)

 

VP Ways & Means: Fundraiser (1-2)

  • Plans and oversees fundraisers to support the approved budget, which in turn supports the goals established by the BOD
  • Works with committee chairs to organize and implement fundraising efforts
  • Presents post-event reports at all regular meetings (EC, BOD, GM)
