Somerset PTSA Family Taekwondo

After-School Program 2023-2024 Spring Session

This program is provided by Action Martial Arts. “Our classes begin with a word of a month and a "mat chat." Words include confidence, legacy, kindness, and persistence. We then move into calisthenics, strength conditioning, and punching and kicking drills. These skills are taught through fun games and challenges. Students will also learn self defense moves and basic Taekwondo forms.

Class Sessions

K through 5 grades and Adults

Day:  Tuesday

Time:  6:30pm - 7:30pm  

Dates: 4/16,4/23,5/7,5/14,5/21, 5/28, 6/4,6/11(total 8 sessions, 4/30 no class due to STEAM Night)

The class is open to all Somerset families, including siblings (ages 5 and above). However, in the case of a non-Somerset student enrolling, we require their parent to be present at all times. Please note that it is a drop-off event for Somerset students. (If a student is running around and not following the coach's instructions discreetly, the coach will request that the parents dismiss the student from the session.)

We highly recommend that you maintain an active PTSA membership.

Somerset PTSA member early registration opens at 10am Wed, March 27. Please purchase a membership prior to starting the registration process. Create/Renew PTSA Membership. (Please note that new memberships may take up to 24 hours to be reflected on the website. )

General registration opens at 10am Friday, March 29. This registration will be opened to all families in Somerset at this time.

Please check and update your child's grade and teacher's name prior to registration through My Account. 

Cost: The tuition rate is $200(with an additional 3% transaction fee that will be added during the checkout)
 
There is a small chance that this needs to be adjusted if the enrollment number is lower than expected.

Effective January 1, 2024, all tuition received will be allocated to the Somerset PTSA After School fund. These funds will be applied towards various purposes, including Club activities, teachers/mentors/coaches cost, materials and equipment, building usage fees, janitorial services, insurance, and other costs related to Club activities.

In the event of any surplus at the end of each session, the excess funds will be redirected to the Somerset PTSA general fund. This general fund will contribute to supporting PTSA's overall activities, including grants for the Somerset GSA, Curriculum enrichment grants, and so on.

Payment Method

Tuition fee of $200 will be collected during registration. You will be redirected to PayPal at the end to submit payment information.

Refunds are on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed. You agree that you are registering for this program with no expectation of receiving any refund should you choose to withdraw your child.

Program Enrollment Capacity

Minimum: 12 Maximum: 50 (Please note that one spot will be reserved for the Club Chair, if applicable.)

Parent Participation

Parents must be available to attend at least one to two sessions during the year for each enrolled student to assist the coaches. This participation is required. Parents will help to run the class and make sure rooms are clean at the end of class. As volunteers, parents are free to join classes and learn martial arts with kids together on that specific volunteer day.

The SignUp Genius is set up with all the sessions. It is a first-come, first-serve basis so please sign up for the dates that work best for your schedule. After Jan 8th, in order for us to have at least two volunteers per session, we will assign dates to parents who have not signed up.

Parents must complete the Bellevue School District Volunteer background check and check-in at the Somerset Office on their volunteer day. 

Club Chair Sign Up

As the Club Chair, a special arrangement will be made to reserve a spot in the club for your student. We appreciate your commitment and look forward to your active involvement in shaping a positive experience for both your child and the entire club.

As a chair, your responsibilities will include:

  1. Managing Parent Volunteers: This involves creating a sign-up sheet for parent volunteers to assist with the class.

  2. Communication with Parents: Sending out emails to parents regarding class information to keep them informed.

  3. Addressing Parent Inquiries: Responding to any questions or concerns that parents may have by email.

Coaches

Our lead instructor, David Arendt is a 2nd degree black belt and national level Taekwondo competitor. He has coached national tournaments as well as Junior Olympians. He founded Action Martial Arts of Bellevue, WA in 2007 and has served as lead instructor since. Our assistant instructor, Olga Tenenika is a 1st degree black belt  with 10 years of Taekwondo experience. She joined AMA as a student in 2012 and earned  her black belt in 2018. Since then she has been practicing and  teaching at Action Martial Arts. Assistant instructor Ellie Peterson is a black belt candidate with five years of Taekwondo experience. She was a classroom teacher for 21 years and now works as a children's book author and illustrator.
